ImagePro> 16 bit gray scale conversion

We've just started acquiring digital 16 bit x-ray radiographs.  

1)  Is it worth doing 16 bit radiographs or will 8 bit do?
2)  The images are HUGE!  Would converting from 16 to 8 bit be acceptable?
If you don't know for x-ray images, please give your opinion for normal
microscopy work.  
3)  I can not get the pseudo-color processing in Image-pro 3.0 to work with
16 bit images.  Is there a way to make it work?
