ImagePro>automatic threshold selection

Hi everyone,

In our application, we often capture and analyze images in real-time.  Our
images often consist of particles being carried in a moving fluid.  In
some cases, we select the threshold value manually (to segregate particles
from background).  We have also used a few "automatic" threshold selection
routines, based on histogram values, derivatives thereof, etc.

I am wondering if anyone else out there has used algorithms to
automatically select the threshold value.  I have seen a few of the
standard ones (such as those in John Russ's Image Analysis
Handbook).  Does anyone have further experience in this area or is
everyone relying on operator-selected threshold values?  Thanks very much!
