I'm not aware of any macro for Gel-Pro Analyzer for calling sequences from a
sequencing gel. But it would have to be a very complex macro for it to be
practical for everyday use. A full-featured application would be necessary.
There are numerous issues to address beyond what a program like Gel-Pro can
offer. For example, sometimes bands appear in two or more of the lanes when
only one is supposed to be there. Simple thresholding doesn't work because
these band heights can be very close to each other. The more sophisticated
applications assign confidence levels and allow the user to visit this
suspect region in order to make a manual over-ride call. There are many
other problems. What looks simple at first turns out to be very demanding.

Media Cybernetics has chosen not to develop this application as the usage of
manual sequencing gels with separate imaging software is rather small and
declining rapidly. We could never sell enough to recover our development
costs. The automated sequencers of Applied Biosystems, Amersham Biosciences,
and Li-Cor have dominated the methodology for DNA sequencing in recent
years.
